BMC to start Heritage walk in Mumbai’s Grant Road area
A heritage walk is being planned by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the Grant Road area to advance heritage tourism. It has been proposed to modify the 1-km stretch that is from Pandita Ramabai Marg to August Kranti Maidan. Under this task work like repairing footpaths with cobblestones to give heritage look will be done. Similar to the heritage lamps used near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus will be installed along with road dividers which are going to be designed.

Immediately the process gets completed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be taking help from guides to arrange heritage walks predominantly for weekends. “We have a plan of creating murals of Mahatma Gandhi on the wall and a small gate and for that, we will have to contact organisations who arrange heritage walks on the weekends. This area holds the richness in history and its own story. The reason for the use of cobblestones is giving a heritage look to the footpaths in this area,” stated Prashant Gaikwad the Assistant Municipal Commissioner, D ward (Malabar Hill, Grant Road).

There are many historical places filled in the area such as August Kranti Maidan which is known for the Quit India movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi against the Britishers. According to the sources, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is going to spend nearly Rs 1.5 crore on this project. The tender has been re-invited by the civic body as in the beginning only one response was received. The time to complete this task of beautification will be three months from the day of the work order issued to the contractor for its completion.
