Mumbai and the adjoining areas are on high alert for heavy rains over the weekend. The disaster management teams and the fire brigade are on alert by BMC. Other departments like education, health, and BEST are asked to be on standby. BMC said on Friday, “The authorities have marked some residential areas for an evacuation near Mithi River if the situation gets worst. The education department has been told to identify the locations of shelters in an emergency. The coast guard, Navy, and NDRF teams are also available for the help if required.”

Heavy rainfall in the past 3-4 days has disturbed the city life to a big extent. The local train services were suspended for some time because of waterlogging on tracks. The rescue agencies are already been alerted by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. CM has also asked them to perform the preventive rescues from low-lying areas.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert in the city and suburbs, as heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days. The city witnessed waterlogging in various areas, which was a concerning issue for BMC. 458 pumps are installed at various locations by the civic administration to pump out the rainwater.

Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that there are 73000 manholes in the BMC jurisdiction and the work is going on to cover all of them. She added, “Most of the manholes have the protective grills and the work is done to cover the remaining. BMC is now planning to cover all the manholes with lock facility to avoid any further accidents.”
