Mumbai: With the 10-day long Ganeshotsav drawing to a close, lakhs of devotees are set to immerse Ganesh idols on Anant Chaturthi, the concluding day of the festival on Saturday, September 6. To ensure smooth and safe celebrations, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified its preparations, deploying 2,178 lifeguards and 56 motorboats across the city’s chowpattys (seashores) for the safety of devotees during the grand immersion.

Major Mandals Ready for Grand Immersions
Several prominent and towering Ganpati mandals, including the world-famous Lalbaugcha Raja, will perform their idol immersions on the tenth day. These processions, accompanied by traditional music, dance, and chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya,” are expected to attract thousands of devotees and onlookers to beaches like Girgaon, Dadar, Juhu, and Versova. To support the heavy footfall, the BMC has arranged 66 German rafts and 1,175 steel plates to help manage idol immersions. In addition, 595 nirmalya kalash (vessels to collect flowers and offerings) and 307 vehicles have been allocated for collection and disposal of nirmalya (floral offerings).

Infrastructure, Lighting and Security at Immersion Points
To maintain order and safety at busy immersion sites, the civic body has set up 129 observation towers for monitoring crowds and activities. For idol immersion logistics, 42 cranes have been deployed across major chowpattys, along with 287 reception rooms to guide devotees. In terms of illumination, nearly 6,188 floodlights and 138 searchlights have been installed to keep the beaches well-lit through the night, ensuring safety and visibility for participants. For convenience, 197 portable toilets have been placed at immersion sites to cater to the massive crowds.

Medical and Emergency Response Preparedness
The BMC’s health department has also prioritized medical preparedness. A total of 236 first-aid stations and 115 ambulances have been positioned at strategic points across immersion sites to provide immediate medical care to devotees if required. In addition, the Mumbai Fire Brigade will keep its vehicles and advanced equipment ready at all major chowpattys to tackle emergencies, including accidents or fire-related incidents. Civic officials have assured that the entire emergency response system has been designed to act swiftly and efficiently.

Safety Advisory for Devotees
Authorities have appealed to devotees to strictly follow safety guidelines during immersions. In particular, they have issued advisories to remain alert to marine hazards such as stingrays and blue button jellyfish, which are commonly spotted along Mumbai’s coast during this season. Devotees have been asked to avoid venturing into deep waters, to follow the instructions given by lifeguards and on-site officials, and to immediately approach medical aid centers, reception rooms, or control booths in case of injuries or emergencies.

Control Rooms and Crowd Management
To keep operations seamless, the civic body has set up 245 control rooms across various administrative divisions, with the central control room located at the BMC’s headquarters. Through these control rooms, officials will monitor crowd movement, traffic flow, and overall safety. Citizens have also been advised to avoid bringing children to heavily crowded immersion points to prevent accidents and overcrowding.

Eco-Friendly Visarjan with Artificial Ponds
In a bid to promote eco-friendly celebrations, the BMC has created 290 artificial ponds across 25 civic wards of Mumbai. These ponds provide an alternative for idol immersion, reducing the burden on natural water bodies and minimizing environmental impact. Citizens have been encouraged to use these facilities, and the civic body has provided a dedicated link listing all artificial pond locations: https://www.mcgm.gov.in/irj/go/km/docs/documents/HomePage%20Data/Whats%20New/ganpati_art_ponds.pdf

A Blend of Devotion, Festivity and Preparedness
Ganeshotsav in Mumbai is not just a religious festival but also a cultural spectacle that binds the city together. With massive idol processions, devotional fervor, and vibrant street celebrations, the immersion day often draws unparalleled crowds. Recognizing the magnitude of the event, the BMC’s meticulous arrangements—from lifeguards and cranes to floodlights and artificial ponds—are aimed at ensuring that the final farewell to Lord Ganesha happens in a safe, organized, and environmentally conscious manner.
As the city prepares to bid adieu to its beloved Bappa, the combination of security, medical readiness, and eco-friendly measures highlights Mumbai’s collective spirit of devotion and responsibility.
