As per the latest data released by the
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), it has been found that the total immersion of Ganpati idols in the year 2021 was at 164,761 all over 246 spots in the city. Out of which 73 were natural and 176 were artificial. Last year this number was as low as 135,000 and in 2019 the figure was at 196,000.
As the situation of Covid 19 prevailed in the city of Mumbai and owing to the speculations of a possible third wave, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had urged the citizens to conduct the immersion at their homes or buildings in a step to reduce the overcrowding at the natural immersion spots.
Owing to this the number of immersion in artificial ponds increased from 2019 when it was 33,000 to 70,000 in 2020 and the trend continued in the year 2020 too. “The number of Ganpati idols immersed in artificial lakes is 79,129. The remaining 85,632 idols were immersed in natural spots.
From the total 79,129 idols which were immersed in artificial lakes75,687 were domestic idols and the remaining 3,502 belonged to the Mandals. After referring to these statistics it can be said that citizens of Mumbai have very significantly responded towards the law and order for the immersion of idols in artificial immersion sites,” stated Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Further, the statement stated that “the total number of idols immersed at natural immersion sports of the city Mumbai which was 85,632, out of which 82,339 were Ganesh idols and others were idols of Gauri.”
