From mid-April, Mumbaikars will be able to experience the new gleam of the vintage lighting system at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. The architectural theme lighting arrangement of the CSMT heritage building is now being renovated and is expected to be completed by the second week of April. Around 40% of the lights will be replaced as part of this project.
In the recent past, the technology employed to illuminate the iconic structure has changed. In the heritage structure, upgraded LED lights are being employed to showcase the city's richness of culture and tradition. To illuminate the station building, RGB LED fittings were employed, which provide over a million different light combinations.
"Our objective is to give the lighting system of the CSMT legacy structure a new gleam," a CR officer explained, noting that the century-old Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) heritage structure is lit up with roughly 1100 lights, including at least 16 million LEDs (Light-Emitting Diode).
Due to ageing, the brilliance of almost 450 of these 1100 lights has been reduced. These 450 lights will be replaced with new ones.
The structure was built in the Victorian era and is noted for having carvings depicting Hindu, Islamic, and Christian themes. The building's central dome reflects western civilization. Yellow and Malad stones were used to construct the structure. It was also created using coloured materials, a technique is known as 'polychromy,' which was popular during the Victorian era.
"The project of revitalizing the themed lighting of CSMT's architectural heritage structures is well underway, with over half of the work finished. The remaining work is expected to be completed in the second week of April 2022 "According to CR officials. Aside from that, work on a comparable lighting setup at LLT and Dadar has begun. The total cost of the project is about 2.4 crore, which includes the cost of lights at the CSMT train station. Only on important occasions, such as Republic and Independence Days, are the LTT and Dadar train station buildings decorated with the theme lighting system.
