The Gateway of India ferry operators has received a letter from the
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) asking them to suspend boat service in the area for the next seven days. The purpose of the request is to prevent ferry collisions with debris in the water after Ganesh Idol immersions.
The immersion of Ganesh idols at the Gateway of India had previously received conditional clearance from the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT). To prevent accidents involving the daily commuter boats, MbPT had instructed BMC to clear the area of garbage, wooden planks, and a throne attached to the statues.
But in order to make sure that large idols are dissolving in the water, BMC has decided to halt ferries for at least seven days. Shivdas Gurav, the A ward's Assistant Municipal Commissioner (AMC), said: "We asked the organisation to close the jetty for a week. It is necessary to disintegrate idols in the sea. The floating idols in the sea are equipped with tables and wooden planks. Debris removal will begin on Monday, December 12."
44 Sarvajanik Ganesh idols and 93 Small Home Ganesh idols were immersed at the Gateway of India on Friday in honour of Anant Chaturdashi. To hoist the idols, BMC constructed two small cranes and one large crane. After seeing the arrangements made at the Gateway of India, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Rahul Narvekar also expressed his gratitude to the BMC, according to Gurav.
In addition to the Gateway of India, Badhwar Park also featured the submersion of 253 miniature idols and 48 Sarvajaniks. 49 little idols and 3 sarvajanik idols were submerged at the Jamshedji Bundar immersion site. In Kuprej Garden's A ward of the BMC, there was just one man-made pond, in which one sarvajanik and ten miniature idols were submerged.
