On Tuesday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray stated that the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing and that wearing masks and increasing vaccination are still necessary. The CM said vaccine minimizes the severity of coronavirus infection after virtually inaugurating a hospital and medical college in Alibaug, Raigad district. He described it as a "Suraksha Kawach" (Protecting Shield).
"The coronavirus pandemic is still ongoing. The question has been raised as to how long we should continue to wear masks. It's difficult to make a judgement at this time. We must take advantage of this period (when incidences are decreasing) to increase vaccination rates" according to Thackeray.
Maharashtra vaccinated 3,84,948 people in 9,504 sessions as part of its ongoing immunization push on February 21. According to government figures, as of 7 A.M. on February 22, 15,41,22,242 persons have been immunized. Since the vaccination drive for this age group began on May 1, 4,86,18,937 individuals aged 18 to 44 years have gotten their first vaccine dosage and 3,55,20,000 have received their second dose, according to state government data.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported 806 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, February 21, bringing the total number of active cases to 14,525. In addition, four COVID-19 deaths were reported during the day, bringing the total number of fatalities to 1,43,586.
