Iqbal Singh Chahal, Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), presided over a special review meeting on Covid-19 directives for the city today. Instructions for more effective action and adherence to Covid-19 prevention measures were discussed. The number of people infected with Covid-19 has been rising in recent days, according to the commissioner. Given our previous experience, we must exercise extreme caution and vigilance when implementing Covid-19 preventative measures, he added.
"In this regard, the directives issued by the Central and State Governments from time to time should be rigorously followed," the commissioner concluded.
The following are some of the main points that were discussed during the meeting:
1. Instructions were given for the prompt supply of oxygen to the city's government hospitals, and the availability of oxygen should be greater than the demand, as per the state government's instructions, as well as activities regarding the availability of oxygen reserves.
2. Instructions were given to ensure regular adherence and public knowledge on mask wear, social distance, and frequent proper handwashing with soap.
3. Those who do not wear masks in the BMC area have been told to expect harsher punishment.
4. All BMC hospitals and Jumbo Covid Hospitals were instructed to be cautious and well-equipped in the event of any Covid virus subtype breakouts, including Omicron.
5. All necessary facilities in all hospitals, such as ambulances, hospital manpower, necessary medical equipment, medicine and injection supply, are instructed to be updated as needed.
6. The operation of the 'Ward War Room' was to be reviewed regularly in all 24 BMC divisions.
7. Instructions were issued to test the capacity of BMC hospitals and jumbo covid hospitals where oxygen centres have been established, as well as to verify that oxygen reaches every oxygen bed in the hospitals in the required quantity.
8. To ensure early testing, Covid-19 test centres have been established around the Municipal area.
"As a precautionary measure against the potential spread of Omicron, preventive measures are being strictly enforced to avoid the transmission of this virus," the BMC commissioner noted. The municipal administration recognizes that this may cause some trouble to Mumbai residents. This is, nevertheless, important in the larger public interest, for which all parties involved should completely cooperate."
