Mumbai Congress has extended its deadline for submission of nominations for upcoming Civic Polls 2017, to December 15 from the earlier date of December 10. The filing of nominations in the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) candidature in the 2017 civic polls has been impacted by the shortage of cash.

“We sold around 2000 forms , and got around 1,000 nominations. But, on the last day, as the deadline neared, I started getting calls from people who did not have enough liquid cash for filing nominations. Even getting demand drafts was time-consuming, so we decided to extend the deadline,” said MRCC chief Sanjay Nirupam.

The MRCC charges Rs. 5000 per nomination. A Congress worker who attempted to pay the fees via a cheque yesterday was asked to return next week with a demand draft of the same amount, or cash. “I have just one bank account and have to wait for four hours to get the money. If I can’t get the money by Tuesday, I will borrow it from relatives,” she said.

Praveen Chheda, leader of opposition in the BMC, told Mirror, “We have been collecting forms for about a month now. But many people still wanted to file their nominations, and this move should fetch us an even better response.”
