Parmindar Bhamra, Congress corporator from Malad, demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) should keep a reserved area only for smoking in all the municipal wards in Mumbai and mark them as ‘smoking zones’, which would be a lonely place.

Bhamra in his notice of motion said, that there are rules about not to smoke on public places. There is ban on selling cigarettes within 100 metre radius from hospitals, railway stations and educational institutions, but rules get flouted. So like ‘silence zones’ there should be ‘smoking zones’ to reduce passive smoking and its ill effects.

If the proposal gets cleared in the civic body’s general body meeting, the municipal commissioner will put his remark and will forward it to the state urban development department for the final nod.
