Ahead of the crucial Mumbai municipal election slated to be held in February 2017, the Indian National Congress is set to launch US-style ‘primaries’ to nominate candidates for the civic body elections.

A candidate wanting a Congress party ticket for a municipal ward would have to fight and win an election against other aspirants to earn his spot. Congress leaders said that thye idea to hold internal elections in the party was first pitched by the Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who recently gave it the green signal. A former election commissioner is also likely to be deployed by the party to oversee the primaries.

Gandhi had attempted to introduce this model for some constituencies during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, but the Congress abandoned it following opposition from a section of the party.
