A 24-member coordination committee has been established by the Maharashtra Government under the guidance of CM Uddhav Thackeray for the protection and maintenance of forts in the state. The members of the committee not only include government officials but also mountaineers and fort lovers.
A major focus of the committee will be on the development of tourism-related infrastructure and maintaining greenery and plantation around the forts. The order issued by the government states that setting up a tourist centre should be on a priority basis at the foothills of the forts and protecting, at the same time developing the biodiversity.
To attract more visitors, the historical records, battles, key events, wildlife, and forest resources should be highlighted. All the information that a visitor is looking for should be provided by the tourist centre, without compromising on the archaeology of the structure.
The six forts which have been chosen for the first phase include- Shivneri, Rajgad, Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg, Sudhagad, and Torna. Last year the state government while struggling with a budget crunch, began roping in private donors to take care of such sites as forts.
