Sakinaka Rape Case: Chargesheet registered against the accused
Mumbai police on Tuesday, registered a charge sheet before the Dindoshi sessions court, in the Sakinaka rape and murder case. The 346-page charge sheet that has statements of around 77 witnesses, was filed against the 45-year-old man who allegedly assaulted the victim with an iron rod.
 
The report contains statements of several key witnesses including the watchman who called the police, the control room officers, the on-scene officers and family members of the accused. The investigation, led by the Assistant Commissioner of police Jyotsna Rasam, was completed in 18 days.
 
The investigation included collecting evidence like forensic, medical and chemical reports. The heinous incident took place in the Khairani road of the Sakinaka district where the alleged accused Mohan Chauhan brutally raped a 34-year-old woman. The woman was then admitted to the Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar where she died during the treatment due to heavy blood loss.
 
Recently, another similar incident shook the state of Maharashtra where a 14-year-old girl in Pune was raped by 13 men. According to National Crime Records Bureau’s 2020 report, India recorded 77 rape cases on an average every day in 2020. Out of all the cases of crimes against women in 2020, there have been around 28,046 incidents of rape, as reported by the NCRB data for the year. Rape is also the 4th most frequent crime against women in India.
