The Carnac Bunder Bridge, built in the British era 154 years ago, will begin to be rebuilt by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in November. In order to securely dismantle the current bridge, the city council has launched a drive to eliminate a few buildings and shanties, which has already started. Since November 2013, the bridge connecting the CSMT and Masjid Road stations has been closed to heavy automobile traffic due to corrosion in the steel supporting the bridge.

IIT-Bombay conducted a safety evaluation in 2018 and suggested that the bridge be demolished and reconstructed. In order to ensure that the bridge is safe until it is taken apart, the railways have urgently completed safety repairs. After awarding the contract for the repair, the BMC is prepared to get started right away once the bridge has been taken down. Additional municipal commissioner for projects P Velarasu stated that the fabrication process has already begun.

A civic official from Ward B stated that the "BMC's solid waste management posts, two pay-and-use toilets, a BEST substation, and a temple will be dismantled" before the building is torn down. "A different location will be chosen for the temple. The BMC positions are currently being moved. Starting on August 22, we will conduct a three-day drive to remove all structures.

50% of the traffic would be diverted to Yusuf Meher Ali Road at Masjid Bunder after the bridge is demolished. Before that, the civic organisation will also remove 27 shanties from the pathway leading to Dana Bunder. In Chembur, substitute housing has been made available for qualified shanties. In order to allow passengers leaving Masjid Bunder Station to use the footpath, the BMC has also launched a campaign against hawkers. By May 2024, the bridge's rehabilitation should be finished. The project will cost around Rs. 41.27 crores.
