BMC Elections 2022
Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections 2022, a section in the city seems to be unhappy. Cab unions operating from both the domestic and international terminals of Mumbai airport are upset with the latest rate hike and have wanted a higher increase. They claim that for the past 6 years or more, prepaid taxi operators had not witnessed a fare boost until August of this year when they received a mere Rs 8 increase.

They filed a letter to Transport Minister Anil Parab about it on December 3. Even as the new Omicron version of the Corona virus has been a source of concern for authorities, this demand has been made. The Mumbai Airport Taxi Riksha Union has written to the Maharashtra Government, requesting that the increase in prepaid taxi prices be considered.

They also want the distance covered by these prepaid taxis from Terminals 1 and 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to be revised. Currently, the base fare is Rs 85 for up to 4 kilometres, Rs 122 for 4.1-6 kilometres, Rs 163 for 6.1-8 kilometres, Rs 203 for 8.1-10 kilometres, and so on. In 2015, the basic fare for the first 4 kilometres was Rs 77.

Around 1500 black and yellow cabs operate out of Mumbai airport, according to the unions. Around 700-900 taxis are stationed at the international terminal, while another 500-600 taxis transport passengers to the domestic terminal. The unions report that business has returned to normal in the previous two months or so, but given the Omicron worry, the situation could worsen.
