Ajit Pawar, the head of the opposition in the state assembly, demanded that the state government appoints senior attorney Harish Salve to represent the state in the Supreme Court on Thursday, December 15, just one day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah helped pave the way for a truce between Maharashtra and Karnataka on the long- pending border issue. "What transpired in the conference in Delhi was reported in the media; there won't be any problems or obstacles in the way of Marathi people coming and going.
The Supreme Court is currently hearing the case (boundary dispute), and the court will now determine the resolution. Mr. Pawar said, "The government should hire Mr. Salve to persuasively argue Maharashtra's case before the Supreme Court. I will make this demand to the Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Devendra Fadnavis. Basavaraj Bommai, the chief minister of Karnataka, "made this scandal without cause." If he had not spoken such a thing, Marathi-speaking people would not have been harassed and automobiles from Maharashtra and Karnataka would not have been vandalised. He continued,
"This resulted in a situation where there was a growing perception (among communities from Jat tehsil) that if we do not advance, we will quit the state. The mood would not have deteriorated. It is detrimental to the state and shouldn't take place. He said that the State Government of Karnataka should adopt an aggressive approach in addition to a conciliatory one. Mr. Pawar recalled that the Karnataka CM had stated that it was his prerogative to attend or not attend the meeting that Mr. Shah had scheduled.
However, yesterday it appears that he (Bommai) made a wise decision. Both parties should work to foster a positive climate, as was decided at the meeting yesterday," he suggested.
In response to Mr. Shah's assertion that certain phony Twitter (handles) identifying prominent figures had been circulated and that this was a very serious matter, Mr. Pawar questioned who was the mastermind behind this, which sparked protests since it wounded people's feelings. "Some individuals believe that the opposition is behind this. We have a certain viewpoint. We are a political party that continues to hold the belief that the state or nation's unity will never be compromised. There should be openness, and it should be determined who is the mastermind behind this and what caused it. Bommai wouldn't have said anything, he continued.
