The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is surveying the uneven distribution of water in slums and hilly areas.  With this in mind, the civic body began a total station survey at Gowandi’s Chitta camp.  The survey is expected to cost 1.35 crore and will help to improve the planning and water pressure of future pipelines.

Many residents in slums and hilly areas have complained about water pressure and uneven distribution. This may be due to a number of factors, including hill slopes and the lack of network lines in some areas.  The survey will be conducted by BMC's Hydraulics Department. Based on the survey, the Department of Hydropower will plan a layout of pipelines and valves to improve water flow on slopes and narrow paths.  It also helps determine where and how many joints are needed,”said a BMC engineer.

Shivshankar Agarwal, Deputy Engineer (Construction), Hydraulic Department, said, “As part of the survey, the design of the area, the width of the roads, the slopes and the angles of the slopes will be taken into consideration.  The planning department of Hydraulic Engineering will then design the water lines.  ”  Considering some of these aspects when laying the pipeline, this survey will help officials to find solutions to areas with challenging geographical location by sending water by tankers.

The survey will be conducted from C, D, E, J, K, H, Custom Colony Road, Payli Pada, Dutta Nagar MGR to Essel Studio in Chitta Camp, officials said.  The survey will cover an area of 50 hectares, taking into account the number of people and the number of huts in the area.  The current completion deadline for the survey is three months. Once the survey is completed, the Civil Body will appoint a contractor to lay the pipelines.  Authorities said they would conduct a similar survey of slums in the hilly areas of Mankhurd and Ghatkopar.
