The
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has released a request for proposals to hire a consultant to investigate the viability of treating effluent to make it drinkable water grade and reusing it. To hire consultants for the waste-water treatment plants in Versova, Bhandup, Dharavi, and Ghatkopar, the BMC published a tender on Wednesday. The study will concentrate on the potability or non-potability of the treated water produced at these facilities.
As part of the Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project-II (MSDP), the BMC has embarked on the mammoth task of building and upgrading seven Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) at Worli, Bandra, Dharavi, Versova, Malad, Ghatkopar, and Bhandup. A pilot project is also put up for the improved treatment of wastewater received from the Colaba tertiary sewage treatment facility in addition to this. The Colaba waste-water treatment facility is where the plant will be built.
At present, the sewage facility at Colaba purifies waste-water to the required standards before allowing the water to be released into the nearest water source. The remaining sewage plants have been pouring out more than 1800 million litres of wastewater per day into the rivers, creeks, or the sea after the first treatment. As a result, the BMC is already making plans to build a comparable facility at its other four STPs in Versova, Bhandup, Dharavi, and Ghatkopar, Vaibhav Gaikwad
According to the project's Chief Engineer at BMC, "We are upgrading the seven STPs, which will be ready in the next two to three years, and the primary treated water is currently released into the sea. In order to determine whether the water can be used for drinkable purposes after advanced treatment, the amount of water that can be treated and reused, and whether a separate pipeline is necessary or not, we are hiring a consultant. Based on the consultant's report, we will decide what to do next ".
