Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now planning to encourage men to accompany their wives for routine antenatal screening and counsel regarding permanent sterilization, to intensify the awareness campaign and educate men about the benefits of vasectomy and dispel myths about the procedure.

Sterilization is one of the better family planning options, yet statistics in Mumbai reveal that it is on the decline. According to reports, in the last five years, the city has seen a 44% decrease in contraception operations. According to data released by the BMC health department, 914 males had tubectomy in 2017-18, 185 in 2018-19, 116 in 2019-20, 49 in 2020-21, and only 43 men had sterilization in 2021-22.

According to the data, despite the fact that vasectomy is a safer procedure than tubectomy, just a few men have decided to undergo it compared women since the year 2018, even though it is a safer surgery than tubectomy. According to Dr. Mangala Gomare, Executive Health Officer of BMC, there are several myths and misconceptions about tubectomy that cause men to hesitate or refuse to undergo sterilization.

"We are attempting to launch as many public awareness campaigns as possible for these sterilizing procedures in order to encourage more people to come forward." We will soon be counselling men, and we have also directed maternity and prenatal homes to dispel sterilisation myths and worries. If they consent, the prenatal screening team will record the husband's responses and refer them to the appropriate team for future action," Dr. Mangala Gomare explained.

She went on to say that people from low-income families believe vasectomy may harm their health, masculinity, or reproductive capacities. This, however, is incorrect. "We've started employing the no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) approach because it's a more advanced treatment that requires less bleeding and stitching. People in the slums also believe that women, not men, should be sterilized," she explained.

Activists and experts, on the other hand, accuse the BMC's family welfare section of failing to increase awareness. "The family welfare department's promotional operations have come to a halt. They used to put out brochures or display boards about the importance of sterilization and family planning. These programmes, however, have now been halted. "How will people learn about them?" activists wondered.

Dr. Rajashree Katke, a senior gynaecologist, believes that men must be encouraged to seek sterilization before they will come forward. Furthermore, she stated that women suffering from health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, and other severe disorders should not take chances, while males should be encouraged to take the lead.

"The civic body has made a fantastic decision that will benefit them in the future." Men have several misconceptions about sterilization, which can only be dispelled by education. As a result, more focus must be placed on raising awareness among women," stated Dr. Rajashree Katke.
