Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will issue global tenders to procure five million Covid-19 vaccines, Mumbai Mayor Kishore Pednaker said on Monday.  She said tenders would be available within two days and the procured doses would be used to provide generous jobs to all Mumbaikars.

Last month, the Maharashtra government had indicated that it would hold international tenders to procure various drugs such as Remediesiver vaccines to address the shortage. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation, led by Praveen Darekar, Leader of the Opposition in the Council, met BMC Commissioner I.S. Chahal called on the civil body to issue free global tenders to provide free immunizations to the people of the city.

Vaccination drive has been faulty in Mumbai and other parts of the state for the past few weeks, and people aged 18-44 have been gaining weight since May 1 after being cleared for jobs.  According to official figures, there are 27,48,683 people in the age group of 45 and 18-44 years, including healthcare workers, senior workers, and civilians.

To avoid congestion at vaccination centers, BMC has also introduced 'drive-in' facilities for senior citizens in the Kohinoor parking lot, with a few similar centers to be opened soon.
