BMC to build new foot over bridge at CSMT

Mumbai: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will spend Rs 6.3 crore on new steel products. Foot over the bridge (FOB) at the site of the Himalayan Bridge that collapsed in March 2019.  BMC expects the bridge to take 15 months to complete, with work expected to begin in late May or early June. BMC officials said the stainless steel bridge would be more durable and would not rust in Mumbai's sea breeze. 
 
The new Phoebe will be 28.50 meters long and 4.40 meters wide.  A section of the Himalayan bridge connecting the northern end of CSMT to the Badruddin Tayabji Road collapsed on March 14, 2019, killing seven people and injuring 30 others.
 
The BMC preliminary investigation report blamed the auditor and engineers for negligence after the incident.  The report submitted by BMC's vigilance department said that the structural audit of the foot over bridge in CST had not been done properly. 
 
It pointed out that major omissions occurred during the structural audit of the bridge.  Soon after the investigation report, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta was suspended.  A senior engineer in the bridge's department said the bridge had been replaced by pedestrians, causing traffic congestion.
