According to the
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Tuesday saw the completion of 65% of the Rs 12,000 crore Mumbai Coastal Road Project. Former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is the mastermind of the massive undertaking. The BMC began construction on the 10.58-km route from Priyadarshini Park to Worli Sea Link in 2018. The road will include tunnels on both sides. By November 2023, the full project is anticipated to be finished.
The journey time and fuel consumption will both be reduced by 34% thanks to the coastal road.
There will be two 2.07-km long tunnels. According to statistics posted on the BMC's Twitter account, the right tunnel has had 78 percent of its work done, and the left tunnel is nearing completion. The 3.82-kilometre section of Package 1 between Priyadarshini Park and Baroda Palace has been finished to about 62.24 percent of its original length.
Out of 111 hectares of land needed for the project, 107 hectares (97% of it) have already been reclaimed, according to earlier claims made by the city council. Additionally, 78% of the sea wall's construction has been finished. 70 of the 175 monopiles that will be erected beneath the bridges had already been constructed.
A massive machine called a "mavala" called a tunnel boring machine is being utilised to build the tunnels. The mavala has a diameter of 12.19 metres, is almost as tall as a four-story structure, and weighs 2,300 tonnes. In addition to attractions like a biodiversity park, a butterfly garden, landscaping, recreational facilities like cycle tracks, open-air theatres, seating areas for tourists, restrooms, and an underground parking lot for more than 1,800 vehicles, the city will have access to an additional 8.5 km long and 20 mt wide sea promenade upon completion of the south phase.
