A year after being damaged due to a landslide, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s plan to reconstruct the road at Malabar Hill within six months on an urgent basis has now seemingly concluded the work. On August 5, at the time of the monsoon, ceaseless rainfall in Mumbai caused a major landslide at Malabar Hill, which led to a fall in the retaining wall of BG Kher Road.
On account of the damage caused, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation devised a technical advisory committee with professors from IIT, NMIMS, BMC officials and members from structural consultancy companies, to study the condition of soil and road before reconstruction of the patch.
The BG Kher Road at the hill slope passes from the awe-inspiring hanging gardens, Kamala Nehru Park, and the Tower of Silence. In just six months, the establishment of the disintegrated wall has been completed. As a consequence of the closure of the roads, vehicles coming from South Mumbai towards Mahalaxmi had to move through the campus coroner flyover.
It was recommended by the traffic police to make use of the Taddeo- Nana Chowk- Opera House via Haji- Ali. The Ghatkopar- Mankhurd link road flyover could finally open for the general public by mid-August. According to the sources, the BMC has spent around 49.50 crores for the construction work, which encompasses Rs 1.26 crores consultation charges. In August, rains smashed up devastation in Mumbai. Various videos of the damage caused by incessant rains in Mumbai went viral on social media, showing floodwater inside shops, building compounds, and slums.
