BMC polls: Finally, BMC plans to better Mumbai’s road worth 2,200 crore
As the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are around the corner, the civic body has decided to finally, retender the road work tender of more than 30 plus road work projects, which were at a pause as the contractors bid 30 percent less than the actual cost of Rs 1200 crores. The civic body ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2022, has decided for an extra profit to the Corporators, it will also look forward to floating tender for further two road projects.

In a statement the senior official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that it is unlikely that any new road works will start taking place in the coming year, looking at a large amount of work that has been tendered now.  Further, he stated that the experience has made us realise that it becomes very important to make sure that strict conditions are applied from the base step that is the tender stage itself, as it’ll help the contractors to not get away with poor quality of work.

“It would not be possible to float all the Rs 2,200 crore work together, will be done in phases in the time frame of next month. This being a short tender, we soon will keep this proposal in front of the civic standing committee for their grant till November,” stated the senior Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a step to lay down strict conditions in front of the contractors, will hold back 20 percent of the retention money and give the remaining 10 percent to the contractors six to seven years after the work is completed.

Further, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that “We would pay 4 percent of the retention money each year after the sixth year is completed and only in that case when we have checked the roughness of the road. We are also planning to have a quality monitoring agency for each of Mumbai’s seven zones to keep an eye on every stage of the road project that is going to be done”.
