The delimitation exercise is almost over and a formal announcement for the new ward boundaries and categories is expected to be announced in first week of October, most likely on 3rd October, 2016.
The western suburbs is expected to see a rise in number of wards from present 97 to 102. In the western suburbs, owing to rise in population in North Mumbai, areas such as Kandivli (R South) and Malad (P North) are likely to see an addition of two electoral wards each to their existing 11 and 16 wards, respectively. However, three wards have been reduced from the suburbs. Areas such as H East (Santacruz Bandra East), N Ward (Ghatkopar) and M West (Chembur) will have one corporator less.
The eastern suburbs is expected to see a rise in number of wards from present 67 to 69 in which the present Deonar and Govandi (M East) areas are likely to get two more wards.
The island city is expected to see a decline in number of wards from present 63 to 56.
A few other areas such as Kurla, Dahisar, Goregaon and Bhandup will have one additional electoral ward each.
This electoral map is been redrawn on the basis of 2011 population. While the total number of wards is expected to remain at 227, a shuffle of about 10 electoral wards has been proposed to the four-member committee appointed by the state election commission, said sources.
Further, of the 24 administrative wards managing various electoral wards, only six administrative wards have remained unchanged and will retain the same number of corporators as 2012 civic elections.
