Owing to the dip in population of the people in South Mumbai and an infux in suburbs, the electoral boundaries have been redrawn
The city administration has shaved off six electoral wards off South Mumbai and added them to the suburbs.
With this rejig, the number of South Mumbai electoral wards has come down from 62 to 56.
“One electoral ward has been carved out of each of the A, B, C, D, E and G-South administrative wards. We have added four wards to the western suburbs and two to the eastern suburbs,” a senior civic official said
The physical area of the remaining South Mumbai wards has been increased, so that each has around 50,000-55,000 voters on an average, the official said.
“The final directions on the number of wards will come to us from the state election commission,” Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh said.
Once the ward boundaries are finalised, the election authorities would organise a lottery to declare reservations for various wards, following which all parties will kick off their campaign. “They are just waiting for a final declaration of the boundaries and the reservation. All candidates and aspirants will hit the ground soon after the announcement,” said a political observer.
While delimitation will influence which candidates get tickets, the lottery system for reserved or open wards will also sway elections.
