The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to setup biogas plants to recycle waste that can be used as a fuel for various purposes like cooking and power generation in all the 24 municipal wards in Mumbai.

According to BMC officials, each ward office will have a 25 Kg biogas plant that would cost approximately Rs 3-3.5 lakh and will be setup in a 100 square metre area in every ward. The plant can recycle raw or cooked food waste, vegetable waste and waste from fish markets and slaughter houses that can be used to produce biogas.

The BMC has already initiated tenders to set up the biogas plants and will begin the process in another two to three months, officials said. 52-65 per cent of the waste generated in the city is organic, according to the data from solid waste management of the civic body.
