With an eye on next year’s elections, leader of Opposition in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Pravin Chheda, has demanded that corporators who were unable to use the funds for public works completely should be given an extension of the budget grant. He also sent a letter in this regard to municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta.

“I have received a lot of requests from my colleagues and fellow corporators. They are facing an awkward and embarrassing position, as the works that they had promised to the public in their wards in the current financial year are yet to be completed,” said Chheda.

In his letter, Chheda categorically mentioned that non-execution of works, such as streetlights, providing dustbins, repair of footpaths, beautification and so on, will send a wrong message about administrative functioning, not only to the people of the ward but also to corporators of the corporation.

Chheda said usually the works taken up in February and March get delayed because of pressure on the executing agencies and the department simultaneously, as each one has to complete their target on time.
