Mumbai :In the first of the Covid-19 pandemics, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) admitted 168 Covid patients to various civic hospitals in the suburbs, including jumbo centers due to lack of oxygen in Bandra, Jogeshwari and Borivali.  The 150 Covid-19 hospitals in Mumbai (private and government-run) require 235 metric tons (MT) of oxygen.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said the city has been facing a shortage for the past two days due to reports that traders are facing a shortage of raw materials.  Pedenecker, who visited several civil hospitals on Saturday to address the oxygen shortage, said oxygen capsule plants would be set up at Shatabdi Hospital and Bhagwati Hospital. Oxygen production was low due to lack of availability of raw materials.

I asked the government to set up a liquid oxygen plant to find a permanent solution to these problems.  Oxygen capsule plant start-up process will begin at Shatabdi Hospital and Bhagwati Hospital.  We are trying to keep the citizens of Mumbai safe and they should cooperate with the municipal government without leaving their homes,”she said. Medical-grade oxygen is used to treat acute Covid-19 patients and other respiratory diseases.

BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani said that although there was no shortage of beds, the problem was the supply of oxygen and the problem would be resolved in the coming days.  Feb. 10. From more than 500 cases per day, from 5,000 by the end of March to 8,000 to 10,000 by the first week of April.  The city reported 8811 new cases on Saturday, with Covid's 571018 cases.  The high daily casualty of the second wave is affecting the city’s healthcare infrastructure.

Of the city's 20,279 beds, 80 percent (16,335) are currently occupied.  Seen at a granular level, intensive care unit beds and oxygen beds are close to full occupancy: the occupancy rate is 98% for ICU beds and 88% for oxygen beds.  Oxygen beds will be available but many small private hospitals in the city did not receive enough oxygen on Saturday, officials said.
