The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has failed to keep its deadline of 21st August to fill all potholes in Mumbai.

It has now given a new deadline of 26th August.

An irked Ganeshotsav Coordination Committee has instructed the Mandals to not depend on the civic authorities. The committee has even informed the traffic department to not blame the Mandals in case of traffic jams.

Naresh Dahibawkar, chairman of the Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti said “We have asked the Mandals to carry steel sheets to place under the tyres of the vehicles carrying idols, so that they do not suffer any damage caused by jerks due to the potholes.” The coordination committee met on Sunday to discuss the issue, as there were complaints from several areas of the city. Suresh Sarnobat, secretary of the Akhil Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mahasangh, said it was unacceptable that the civic body could not fill the potholes in a fortnight. “They cannot give us any excuse as there was a clear dry spell. That is the excuse they generally give. But there was no heavy rain in the last 10 days,” said Sarnobat.

Meanwhile, data compiled by the BMC till August 19, 2016, showed that the number of potholes in the city was even more this year compared to last year on the consecutive day. Last year, on the same day, the city had 3,491 potholes. This year, the number is 3,638. The civic body, however, claims that only 159 potholes remain to be filled in the city. The western suburbs have reported the maximum number of potholes till now.
