Mumbai: During the Pandemic year, BMC's dedicated website for reporting encroachments, removeofencroachment.mcgm.gov.in, received 9,558 complaints from citizens. So far, the city has demolished 466 buildings. Maximum number of complaints received from BMC's L Ward (Kurla), followed by M east (Mankurd, Govandi). A ward (Churchgate, Marine Drive) and D (Malabar Hill, Walkeshwar) received 24 and 87 complaints respectively.
Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh obtained the information in response to a RTI request for complaints received between March 25, 2020 and February 28, 2021. A total of 13,325 petition were received, of which 3,767 were due to duplication. Of the last 9,558, BMC issued notices to 2,730 structures. It was scheduled to demolish 485 but 466 were demolished. Sheikh said,
“As as a civic body
BMC must act quickly to require more action against illegal constructions. It becomes a sight to behold in the city. “Petition includes vertical extensions, room integration, and construction of interior walls. Many of our staff came altogether to work against Covid-19. Despite all this, action was taken wherever possible. But we could not demolish some of the complaints as they were against the property in dispute.
