With the end of the current financial year, it seems that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has become more determined to collect property tax arrears. It now broke a whip against 11,661 defaulters and began the process of attaching their assets. Meanwhile, proceedings have been initiated to auction 42 properties to collect property tax arrears of Rs 210 crore.
The city council had cut off water supply to the properties of 479 defaulters. Officials said there was a delay in settling the arrears until the property was auctioned off. Those involved include commercial, residential, educational institutions, small businesses, government-owned properties, and open plots. Property tax is one of the main sources of income for BMC, after all.
BMC Assistant Municipal Commissioner (Assessment and Collection Department) Sangeetha Hassanale said the properties have not been paid for years despite numerous reminders. We went ahead with the property attachments and they will be auctioned off as well. ”
The Civil Body is preparing to auction 42 properties to collect arrears of Rs 210 crore. May on the list of the main defaulters listed for the property auction. This includes Sumer Associates (Rs 53 crore), Sumer Builders Pvt Ltd (Rs 29. crore), Lokhandwala Kataria Constructions (Rs 13.55 ) and Wonder Value Realty Developers Ltd (Rs 14.65 crore) and more property tax collection has increased to Rs 3,800 crore this year till March 18, 2021.
The civic body had given a deadline of March 8 to those who failed to pay the property tax arrears this year. Those who did not pay the arrears faced action. The target for property tax collection this year is Rs 5,200 crore. The
BMC government is making continuous efforts to achieve this goal. "Despite numerous notices and warnings, defaulters do not budget and do not pay arrears. We have no choice but to attach property, seize and confiscate valuables," Hasnale added.
In the last two days, BMI Co-operative Housing Singh Society in Bandra East has had its car confiscated and BM / B Realty Ltd closed its building after failing to pay property tax arrears of Rs 66 crore. In another activity, Maharashtra Theater Pvt. Ltd. affixed the seal of MAS RNA Corporate Ltd. to a multi-storey building at Bandra East. Due to non-payment of Rs 21 crore, valuables and equipment of the defaulter on the eighth floor of the building were confiscated.
