BMC gets National Award for best water supply

Mumbai: BMC has renewed its prestigious 'Jal Nirmalata' award to provide clean water to its citizens.  BMC received an award from the Indian Water Works Association (IWWA) for 99.34% supply of clean water. The IWWA annually awards the National Award for Water Purity.  The award is given especially to local self-governing bodies for improving water quality through technology, efficient administration and high quality management of water supply to the citizens.  2019-20 Deputy Commissioner (Special Engineering) Ajay Rathore recently received the award at a special function in Hyderabad. 

 

Officials said that water samples distributed to citizens of 21 cities across the country were collected by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs under the Prime Minister's Water Life Mission program.  Tested for 47 different levels of water as per IS 10500: 2012.  Water samples were collected from Worli, Curry Road, Zurich, Malad, Kandivali and Jogeshwari.  Water samples were collected from Pokkai, Sakinaka and slums Ghatkopar and Chempur in the eastern suburbs.  All samples were found to meet 47 criteria. 

 

BMC supplies 3850 million liters of water to its citizens every day.  The water department has identified 358 sites in the reservoir and has a water supply system to collect water samples.  The Department of Health and Quality Control (Waterworks) collects water samples daily from 110 to 130 locations and uses the latest and most accurate technology, membrane filter technology (MFT) in the laboratory.  Jurisdiction of Health Department.  In December 2020, the laboratory in Dadar was designated by the National Laboratory Board (NABL).  Officials said that during the period 2013-14 to 2019-20, BMC replaced 250 km old pipes of different diameters.  They have been repaired at some places.
