Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) last week expressed a global interest in buying 1 crore vaccine doses. However, this has not yet garnered any response. On Tuesday, 18th of May, BMC has decided to extend the deadline for the global tender to supply and procurement the vaccine to Mumbai. On May 12, BMC launched a global effort to acquire a vaccine for Mumbaikars.

The last day to receive questions from interested bidders was Sunday, May 16th, with a deadline of 3 pm on May 18th. However, as of Monday afternoon, the civic body hadn’t even received a single bid. As India is currently facing a severe shortage of vaccines, this bid will help speed up the drive in the city. According to BMC's tender document, China is restricted from bidding.

In addition, vaccines that are not approved by the Center must be self-administered. Currently, SII's Covishield, Bharat Biotech's Covaxin, and Sputnik V from Russia are available in India. Vaccine manufacturers are expected to bid for BMC's tender under the guidelines of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and must have DCGI approval to distribute Covid-19 vaccines in the Indian Territory.
