BMC elections likely to be delayed, as Mumbai’s Ward Count Rise

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections which are scheduled for February 2022, are expected to delay due to the recent decision declaration by the government to add nine more electoral wards in the city of Mumbai. The corporators stated that this move by the government will set back the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2022, as the restructuring work will have to be started from the beginning. This process of restoring will at least take two to three months. On March 8th, the tenure of the current Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to end with 227 members. Due to the Covid 19 situation and lockdown being imposed all over the state the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections were postponed to February next year that is 2022.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are held in February after which the Mayor is selected. Knowing the fact, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) submitted the data on the restructuring of the city’s 227 electoral wards in front of the State Election Commission on October 28, followed to which the state election commission on Wednesday took the decision to add up nine more wards which will take the strength up to 236.

“The decision has just been out, the whole process will have to be started from the scratch, as also if we are increasing one ward in an area that will lead to redrawing the wards in the surroundings too. Around two months of the time frame it will take then there will be suggestions, objections which will take another one month,” stated Bharatiya Janata Party’s Bhalchandra Shirsat opposing this decision of the government and looks forward to moving to the court.
