BMC elections 2022: Opposition slams BMC for Tax waiving to Rich Hotels
Earlier this month, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had proposed to deliver another wellness package for 234 hotels that had offered rooms to quarantine high-risk contacts and international passengers arriving in the city at the time of pandemic and the second wave had hit the city. Around 41.9 crores of property tax were expected to be waived for the period from February to May.

When considering the earlier situation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) last year waived property tax of 22 crores for 182 hotels and lodges from April to June 2020 during the first wave of the pandemic. With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2022 near, the opposition taking a jibe at the civic body attacked stating that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) should be more concerned about the people who are residing in houses which are smaller than 500 sq ft and paying property tax and on the other hand these hotels are being lifted off.

“We are not objecting relief to big hotels. Five-star hotels in the city of Mumbai were expected to lend their rooms free of cost towards the Covid Care Centre but still, they had charged rent. Therefore, noticing this, the property tax waiver should be taken back,” stated Abhijeet Samant from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator in the letter written to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal.

They further alleged that this will be very unfair of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to citizens who have been paying and paying property tax for a long period now despite losses they had throughout the pandemic. This is a crucial issue ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2022 where the opposition has come out majorly to take a jibe at the ruling Shiv Sena.
