The
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to spend Rs 70.34 lakhs to refurbish and decorate the vintage Anand Vitthal Koli Pyau, a heritage drinking water fountain on Gokhale Road in Dadar west, ahead of the elections. The idea will be presented to the Standing Committee for approval during its meeting on Friday.
The BMC had issued tenders, with the anticipated cost of refurbishment and three-year maintenance work being Rs. 64.80 lakhs. The tenders had piqued the interest of four bidders. M/S D.R. Shah Construction Company was chosen as the winning bidder after agreeing to finish the project for Rs. 67.88 lakhs. After taxes, the total cost comes to Rs. 70.34 lakhs. The construction company will have 36 months to complete the project.
The proposal has been presented to the Standing Committee by the chief engineer of the Building Maintenance and Heritage Conservation department. According to the plan, the city has 30 pyaus or drinking water fountains, with many dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The upkeep of pyaus was handled by charitable trusts or contributors at the time.
The Indo-Saracenic Porbandar stone has been etched with the Anand Vitthal Koli Pyau. The fountain features a mausoleum and a floral micro pattern. The building is designated as a heritage structure of Grade III. The BMC has made the decision to clean and renovate the building. Broken stones will be replaced with stones of the same quality.
The water system will be brought back online. The job also entails the installation of an information board as well as appealing lighting. Seats or benches will be installed, and the surrounding area will be beautified. Graffiti will be put on the Pyau wall to depict Mumbai's history.
The bidding proposal was developed by conservation architect Rahul Chemburkar of Vastu Vidhan Projects, who noted, "A noteworthy pyau being restored is the ancient Anand Vitthal Koli Pyau. The Pyau was built not only to satisfy the thirst of passers-by, but also to quench the thirst of animals."
