BMC elections 2022: BMC to build a desalination plant in the city of Mumbai
Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections 2022, the civic body has come out with a plan of setting up a desalination plant converting the sea water to potable water. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has already floated tenders in this regard to hire consultants to evaluate the design for desalination.

With this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared that this tender for further construction is likely to be floated around June 2022. “The construction work is likely to be started from next year and the plant will take around four years to be functional if everything goes accordingly,” stated Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official.

Further, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that tenders have already been floated with an estimated cost of construction at 18,000 crores. After the project was revived in 2020 a memorandum of association (MoU) was signed in the year 2021 in June with an Israeli technology who will be providing us a detailed project report for this project.

A total of 200 million litres per day can be processed in this plant, the work for this is expected to begin from the next year.
It was the year 2007 when the desalination plant came into consideration after which the state government had appointed a high-level committee that suggested that the desalination plant should be set in the city of Mumbai. The aim of this tabling this issue was to develop an alternative water source as there are many problems such as poor rainfall.

It was all set to form the desalination plant in the year 2016 one in South Mumbai and the other in Western suburbs, but the same year the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cancelled stating that the costs are too high and with some land issues.
Finally, Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray showed interest in it and the plan again is stood. I
