As the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections 2022, approach the civic body is all set with their developmental activities. Soon after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) completed over 50 percent work of toilets that were to be built under the Slum Sanitation plan it now has pulled off the plan stating that it would relaunch it after a survey is conducted.

The 50 percent work that was done till now took a total of three years by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to complete under the slum sanitation plan. When did questions start to be raised on why so much time? The contractors went on to blame the pandemic for the delay in work.

A proposal costing 422 crores was cleared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the year 2019 for the construction of 22,774 toilets. Till the month of August-September 2020, only 20 percent of the total 1,164 toilet blocks were completed.

“There were many space issues too as several areas are included in the list where there is no suitable space for the construction of toilet blocks. That’s the reason why the project is at pause,” stated a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officer. If seen in the year 2017, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had made its mind and planned to construct 16,703 toilet seats which earlier was 14,173 toilet seats.

Then after this directly a year later in 2018, a tender was issued. Then in 2019, the standing committee approved the project. But still, the situation to date has not been good. The people who require this service stated that as of now whatever the project was going on didn’t help them in anyway and now as the civic body has scrapped the project that hassled to inconvenience. This is a crucial time for the civic body, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in 2022 are around the corner.
