With Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2022 around the corner, recently the Maharashtra Cabinet has cleared a proposal to maximise the strength of Mumbai civic corporation which earlier was at 227 and now has been revised to 236 members. Soon after this decision, the urban development department will be amending the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888 in a way to change the composition of the corporation. With the decision, the state government explained why this decision was important looking at the growing population in the past two decades. Responding to this decision the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed the state government stating that this move was prompted by the Shiv Sena which is ruling the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as they are scared of the election result and were delaying the polls.
In the year 2011, the state government had not increased the number of corporators despite the rise in population by 3.87% from 2001. The 2011 census will be used for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2022 as owing to the Covid 19 situation and lockdown being imposed in the state, census 2021 had to be delayed. “As the population is increasing since the year 2001, so this move could have not been avoided. The number of a corporation that has been increased is in proportion to the population and the voters,” stated State Urban Development Department Minister Eknath Shinde.
Further, adding to his reason, he stated that this step was also necessary, to provide better infrastructure to the wards, to plan things more efficiently, if we wouldn’t have increased the numbers the wards would have had a bigger population and voters. With this Congress supported the decision which is a part of the alliance with the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.
