Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar has announced that the next Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls will be held next year from January to February Pednecker added that the polls would only take place if the Covid-19 situation was under control. If the Covid situation is under control, the BMC will hold a vote from January to February next year, otherwise, the vote will be postponed,” she said.

The State Election Commission (SEC) had on Monday directed the BMC to start preliminary preparations for the municipal elections. The BMC Election Department had written to the SEC seeking directions for pre-poll preparations. The Commission proceeded this to the Municipal Committee and granted a white flag to the civic body. With this, the delimitation of wards will be done based on population. In addition, ward-wise reservations will be notified.

In addition, the voter list will be updated before the final list is released. The current term of the Shiv Sena-ruled BMC will end on March 7 next year. In addition to BMC, the terms of 17 other corporations, including Thane, Pune, Nashik, and Nagpur, will also come to an end. Elections to five municipal corporations, including Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, and Kalyan-Dombivali, were not held earlier due to contagion. BMC is the richest civic body in the country and has an annual budget allocation of more than the budgets of many states.
