Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has levied a fine of Rs 54 crore in the last 399 days on 26.87 lakh citizens caught unmasked in public places during the epidemic. It is clear from the data shared by the civic body that the number of offenders caught on a daily basis has dropped significantly due to restrictions on the movement of civic officials in accordance with the ‘Break the Chain’ rules.
According to figures released by BMC, 4,314 people were arrested without masks on Tuesday. Of these, 1,478 were arrested by Mumbai police. A fine of Rs 5.67 lakh was imposed on these offenders. From mandating masks to controlling crowds and large gatherings, BMC has regulated monitoring and implementation measures to prevent the spread of the virus. The offense, which was punishable by a fine of Rs 1,000 till September 12, 2020, was reduced to a fine of Rs 200 from September 13, 2020.
BMC offered its employees an incentive of 10 percent of the total fine collected each day. The city council has deployed marshals to enforce the mask rule in public places. Mumbai police are also punishing those who do not wear masks in public places. In addition, there are volunteers at all railway stations who monitor the passengers. Of the 26,87,339 people who violated the mask law, BMC arrested 23,50,159. These fines were collected within 399 days from April 20 to date. In K-East ward (Andheri (east), Jogeshwari, Vileparle) 1,36,707 offenders were fined. 1,34,159 were fined from the El Ward (Kurla and parts of Sakinaka). The lowest number of offenders (36,337) were caught in the M-East.
