The BMC has so far seized 400 kg of plastic, taken legal action against 131 violators, and amassed fines totaling Rs 6 lakh in its retaliatory campaign against defiant users of prohibited plastic. Similar legal repercussions are being meted out to three miscreants who refused to pay fines. The civic official informed him that the action falls between July 1 and July 22.

The state legislature passed a law outlawing the use of single-use plastic in 2018. At the time, the civic organisation actively enforced the law by seizing one lakh kg of plastic. Additionally, huge fines totaling Rs. 5,53,90,000, which typically range from Rs. 5,000 to 25,000, were collected. According to the law, if necessary, the offender could spend three months in jail.

However, the Covid outbreak caused the BMC's crackdown to end abruptly after two years. Beginning on July 1, the campaign was once more relaunched with great vigour. This time, the local government started seizing single-use plastic containers. The civic team from the markets, shops and establishments and licence departments used to frequent malls, supermarkets, and shops during this month's action.

The Maharashtra Degradable and Non-Degradable Waste (Control) Act of 2006 places restrictions on the manufacture, movement, sale, storage, handling, and use of plastic that is prohibited and is not permitted as prescribed by the Maharashtra Government.
