Compared to the previous two years, there is now more stock in the seven lakes that provide water to the city. The water supply increased by 67,903 million litres over the previous day as a result of the catchment areas' ongoing heavy rainfall. This stock has increased the amount of water in the lakes by 17 days, bringing them to 40% of their maximum capacity, or 14,47,363 million litres.
The city received plenty of rain in the previous year, but on July 11 the lakes' water levels were only at 17%. Only 21% of the water stock was in the lakes in 2020. In the catchment areas during June of this year, there was no rainfall. But within the first week of the month, the city received 70% of the typical July rainfall. The rain over the weekend added 1,65,510 million litres of water to the stock, with 97,607 million litres added on Sunday and 67,903 million litres added on Monday.
Currently, 5,83,639 million litres of the lakes' total capacity are being used to supply water to the city. The civic official claimed that the current stock could last for up to five months. The Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes are used by the
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to supply 3,850 million litres of water to the city every day. Every year on October 1, the BMC evaluates the lakes' water levels. The civic organisation initially imposed a 10% water cut, which was later lifted on July 8.
