Environmentalists: BMC cannot be permitted to allow existing roads via ESZ area
To widen the Aarey main road known as Dinkar Rao Desai Marg having a width of nine meters, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the past week released a tender to four lanes, having a width of nine meters. This is the second time that such a development project has been issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

This decision of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sparked a fire in the environmentalists and stated that projects like these of expanding infrastructure can harm the ecology in the area. “The rules which have been set in the SEZ notification, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is taking steps against it, the notification stated that the traffic in that road should be controlled, so owing to this the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cannot be permitted to allow the continuing road, via ESZ and Forested areas of Aarey, that is to be used as some sort of traffic shortcut,” stated an Environmentalist.

In August, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had floated an identical tender for the betterment of Aarey Road but had to later scrap as controversy started to come up over contractors stating that they have been given less than 40 percent of the estimated cost of 1,200 crores for the road repairing.
