Vaccination for pregnant women at limited centres will be offered by the Mumbai civic corporation from Monday. After the centre’s indication on July 2, the state had ordered all districts to bring out vaccination for pregnant women by next week. More than 20 lakh women will be qualified for vaccination in the state, with 1.5 lakh in Mumbai.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has come up with opening the drive at medical colleges, maternity homes, and peripheral hospitals handling childbirth. “25-30 centres have been recognized. And using responses as the bases the corporation will add more centres to it.” Stated Dr. Mangala Gomare,
BMC’s executive health officer.
Training sessions were organized by the state immunization department on counseling corners, seating, and separate queues for vaccination. The counseling centres will be the ones where the pregnant women visit for check-ups like hospitals, clinics, and maternity homes.
“Counselling plays a very crucial role as per our decision the places where women visit regularly will counsel them and make them informed about the benefits of vaccination. The time they get counseled, then they may go to the vaccination centres.” Stated Dr. Dilip Patel, head of the state immunization.
“The pregnant women who may visit the vaccination centre without any prior counseling for them the Centres will station well-experienced staff. They will be informed about reporting unfavorable events, which is very crucial,” said Dr. Gomare. After the studies found a higher number of deaths in Covid Positive pregnant women, Gynaecologists have rooted for vaccination. In the second wave, the death toll was severe compared to the first wave, the researchers claim that the new variant in the second phase B.1.617 could have played a role.
“Vaccination should be considered as a priority for those women who are pregnant for the child to be safe in the womb because chances of preterm birth, stillbirths, and many other complications have been found so far to be higher in pregnant women,” said Dr. VK Paul, the member- health, NITI Aayog.
