Mumbai: To ensure that the third wave of the epidemic does not affect the state as it did in the second and that the city is well prepared to deal with it, the
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and various private organizations have started increasing the bed capacity of Covid-19 patients in Mumbai. Although the civic body wants to increase the bed strength in the National Sports Club of India (NSCI) by 650, it has not yet been decided and they will only do so if necessary.
However, BMC has already taken over the club's card room, banquets, and coffee shop to provide Covid-19 care. Although the entire dome of NSCI has been used for the same purpose since last year, even this year the HN Reliance Foundation will handle the existing 550 beds at the Center. While the city has seen a drop in Covid-19 cases, the club currently owns about 150 beds.
We have not yet decided to expand the existing facility at NSCI," Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani said. Sources said that the club members were crying badly about why the various facilities at the club had been taken over when the BMC had not yet decided to increase the capacity of the beds. About 49 percent of the city's total bed capacity for Covid - 19 patients is currently available for use.
The various hospitals have 22,000 beds, of which 10,000 are vacant. Of the 2,995 ICU beds in the city, 90 percent have the capacity of BMC ICUs not significantly increased, while 285 beds are vacant. The Civil Body says 73 ventilator beds are available.
