On Tuesday, the Shiv Sena attacked the BJP, accusing it of "double standards" in soliciting votes in the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji while maintaining silent over the vandalism of his statues in Karnataka. In the wake of the vandalism of the statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji and freedom warrior Sangolli Rayanna, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut challenged the BJP administration in Karnataka to ban Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES).
"On this topic, the Centre employs double standards. Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to Varanasi and spoke about Chhatrapati Shivaji and how he fought the Mughals to entice voters. However, not a single Union minister has spoken out against the disrespect directed against Chhatrapati Shivaji in a BJP-run state "Here's what Raut had to say to the reporters. Raut said MES was not a political organization but has been at the forefront of raising concerns affecting Marathi-speaking people in the Belgaum district for the past 70 years.
"They have made sacrifices and shed blood for Marathi-speaking people on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border," Raut added. He stated that the Karnataka government had unjustly detained and caned more than 200 MES activists. "What are the BJP's hypersensitive leaders up to?" Raut inquired. "Talking about banning MES is one thing, but I dare them to prohibit the MES," the Shiv Sena leader remarked.
