Maharashtra would soon appoint a committee of ministers to examine and take action to settle the long-running boundary dispute with Karnataka, as instructed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced here on Thursday. He reaffirmed that the state administration is supporting the Marathi people in the contentious border regions and promised that measures will be taken to address their complaints and issues. Devendra Fadnavis, the Deputy Chief Minister, stated that the government will follow Shah's directions and make every effort to maintain peace in the area while the boundary dispute is still before the Supreme Court.

The two made their remarks following a late-night meeting with Shah, Karnataka's Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai, and the home minister Araga Gyanendra in New Delhi. Shah stated at the meeting that he had recommended both states maintain the status quo until the Supreme Court decides on the issue. He also ordered the formation of a committee composed of three ministers from each state to coordinate, travel to the areas in dispute, research, and address local issues.

Shah also asked the two states to refrain from making accusations or counter-accusations against one another or demands of one another until the SC judgement in order to prevent the situation from getting worse. Shah's action was applauded by Nationalist Congress Party national spokeswoman Clyde Crasto, who added that it needs to be seen whether the Karnataka Chief Minister will follow the directives or not. "Will CM Bommai obey Shah's directions, or will he continue to defy them by making irrational claims like in the past? When it comes to the border problem, which is very significant to the people of our state, Maharashtra's Chief Minister is in any case silent "said Crasto.
