There is some good news for Central Railway travellers. The construction of constructing a tiny pumping station at an ONGC outfall near Masjid Bunder station would be completed before the monsoon, according to a work order already issued. Only a 300 cum capacity pump was formerly provided at the ONGC outfall. As a result, massive flooding has recently been recorded at Masjid Bunder and Sandhurst Road train stations. The new micro pumping stations will be capable of pumping 9000 cubic metres of water per hour.

The Masjid and Sandhurst region is one of the Central Railway's low-line portions. Suburban trains were stuck between Sandhurst Road and Masjid railway stations near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in 2020, forcing the railway to contact the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for help during the monsoon.

Previously, Central Railway had waterways capacity at Masjid Bunder and Sandhurst Road railway stations by constructing two extra subterranean stormwater ways, where micro tunnelling methods were used until last year. Micro tunnelling is a trenchless method of building small diameter tunnels, which is particularly useful for projects that require the tunnel to cross busy highways, railways, or waterways.

A senior CR officer confirmed the development, saying that during a coordination meeting between railway and Municipal Corporation officials (which took place last week at BMC headquarters), BMC officials stated that a work order for the construction of a mini pumping station at the ONGC outfall has already been issued and that it will be completed before the monsoon in June 2022.

Mumbaikars will get the benefits of both new waterways created by the railway, the first at Masjid and the second near Sandhurst Road station after this little pumping station is completed. Because the capacity of the present pumps at the ONGC outfall is insufficient, waterlogging was detected at a few locations during the last monsoon as well.

Aside from that, the flooding issue at Byculla railway station during the monsoon was also highlighted during the conference. "With the water flow of the area in mind, BMC officials agreed to build three extra pumps, each with a capacity of 3000 cum per hour, for the pumping of rainwater in the Byculla area," said a senior railway official present at the meeting.
